About Us
The Music Tree School
Our Story and Mission
The Music Tree School opened its doors in 2014 with a clear mission: to cultivate musicianship, creativity, and confidence in learners of all ages by offering professional instruction, high-quality instruments, and community-centered performance opportunities. Located at 3046 Stony Point Road in Richmond, VA, our school grew from a simple idea — that consistent, thoughtful music education changes lives. Over the years we’ve become a trusted destination for lessons, instrument sales and rentals, and educational programming that serves families, schools, and adult learners across the region.
Our Philosophy
We believe music education is most effective when it respects the individuality of each student while maintaining high pedagogical standards. Our teaching emphasizes:
Musical literacy
Developing sight-reading, ear training, theory, and structural understanding of music.
Expressive artistry
Encouraging students to make musical choices and develop interpretive skills that communicate emotion and musical intent.
Technique for longevity
Building healthy physical habits to support sustainable playing across instruments.
Growth mindset
Celebrating effort and progress, not just outcomes. We set achievable milestones that build confidence and motivation.
Our History and Growth
Founded in 2014 by local music educators and community advocates, The Music Tree School started with a handful of students and a simple studio. Our consistent commitment to quality instruction and community outreach led to steady growth. We expanded our faculty, added group programming, established instrument partnerships with Yamaha and Alvarez, and introduced a rental program to lower the barrier to access. Years later, we remain dedicated to personalized instruction, thoughtfully curated curricula, and a welcoming environment that encourages musical exploration.
Programs and Impact
Over the last decade we’ve launched programs across several fronts:
Private lessons: Continuous, individualized instruction across piano, guitar, violin, voice, drums, all Band and Orchestra instruments
Group classes: Musicianship courses, ensemble coaching, developmental classes, Rock Band, String Ensembles, Musical Theater, and early Childhood Music Classes for young children.
Instrument services: Sales, rentals, and accessories — supporting families who need quality instruments without high upfront costs.
Community events: Recitals, workshops, masterclasses, collaborative projects, and Courtyard Concerts in place of Workshops with local schools and organizations.
Our Team and Instructional Approach
Our faculty is composed of professional performers, experienced educators, and industry-trained teachers. Each instructor is chosen for pedagogical skill, communication, and the ability to inspire students. All of our instructors are degreed instructors in their instruments. We emphasize ongoing professional development; our teachers regularly attend workshops, conferences, and masterclasses to keep teaching practices current and effective.
The Music Tree School promotes collaborative teaching practices. Teachers consult on shared repertoires, theory progressions, and performance opportunities so students experience a consistent and coherent path through their studies. Our faculty team ensures that each student’s experience is developmentally appropriate and aligned with their personal goals — whether recreational or aspirational.
Community, Outreach, and Education
Beyond individual lessons, The Music Tree School participates in community outreach and educational collaborations with local schools and organizations. We believe music education should be accessible, and we work to provide scholarship opportunities, low-cost group programs, and performance partnerships with neighborhood schools and community centers. These initiatives support younger students and underserved families in experiencing the benefits of music learning.
